6月1日公開、映画『アニマル ぼくたちと動物のこと』。国際生物多様性の日の特別試写会シンポジウムに参加 JGI & Roots & Shoots attends "Animal" Premier on International Biodiversity Day
僕たちは絶滅するの？ 映画『アニマル ぼくたちと動物のこと』が教えてくれること
シリル・ディオン監督の最新作、映画『アニマル ぼくたちと動物のこと』(配給：ユナイテッドピープル）。16歳の若きアクティビスト2人のベラとヴィプランが、6度目の大量絶滅を阻止する方法を探して世界各地をめぐる本作は、若き世代の怒り、混乱、絶望、そして希望など、感情のシフトを丁寧に描き、共感だけでなく新しい気づきをも与えてくれます。美的で感動的であると同時に、教育的な映画でもあり、工業的畜産やプラゴミの問題、人間と動物の共生、脱成長の社会の実現、生物多様性など、幅広い問題への理解を深めるきっかけにも。そして、気候危機の時代に、私たち人間の役割とは何か──そんな問いを投げかけます。
5月22日の国際生物多様性の日に特別試写会シンポジウムが日比谷コンベンションホールで開催され、本シンポジウムに招待されたのは高校生〜大学院生、専門学校生までの将来の社会を主導していく若者たち。映画の主人公、ティーンエイジャーのベラとヴィプランの2人が動物保護と気候変動を阻止するための学びのジャーニーに見入っている様子が見られました。
ジェーン・グドール博士の出演
本作には、ジェーン・グドール博士も登場します。ジェーン博士は、シリル・ディオン監督からこの映画の話を聞くやいなや、参加することに大喜びした。というのも、この映画は人間が自然界に与えたダメージを浮き彫りにする一方で、人間が作り出した問題に対する解決策を見出そうというメッセージでもあるからです。これは、ジェーン博士とジェーン・グドール・インスティテュートの思いと重なります。
幼少期から尊敬し憧れてきたベラが、映画の中でジェーン博士の魅力を存分に伝えてくれるだけでなく、3人が交流するシーンは琴線に触れ、ジェーン博士らしいユーモアにも思わず会場からは笑いが。映画を観終わった後、会場にいた皆様もジェーン博士のファンになっていました。
上の写真は、ジェーン・グドール・インスティテュート フランスのメンバーと撮影クルー。ディオン監督は「ジェーンは不思議な存在です。彼女の純粋な笑顔は人の心を動かす力があります。隣に座っているだけで、私はまるで山の頂上で3週間瞑想していたかのような気分になります」と先日来日した際に語ってくれました。

上映後、WWFジャパン自然保護室長の山岸さんより「生物多様性の今」というテーマで、現在の地球環境の現状を共有いただき、このまま何の対策も講じなければ減少し続けてしまう生物多様性を回復させるためには「ネイチャー・ポジティブ」を実現していくことが喫緊の課題であるとお話しいただきました。
続いて、私たちジェーン・グドール・インスティチュート・ジャパンの大庭より、ジェーン博士のエピソードやRoots & Shootsについて紹介。その後、ジェーン・グドール・インスティチュート・ジャパンのルーツ&シューツのリーダーである横浜インターナショナルスクールのRenaさんが、自身の学校から始まったアクションを発表しました。また、インターンとして当団体に参画するふきたろうさんからも、彼女が過去に取り組んだ神奈川県立高校の再エネ化やパワーシフトの重要性について話しました。

他にも、齋藤克希さん（サスティナブル推進協会NAMIMATI 代表理事）、稲場一華さん（元生物多様性わかものネットワーク4代目代表）、小学生環境活動家 Mirei（Dream Builders設立者・代表）、ひかりん、てっちゃんさん（Fridays For Future Yokohama）からもお話があり、ひとりひとりの地球環境を守りたいという思いがよりよい未来を作っていく、そしてこれからの社会を牽引していくであろう頼もしいリーダーたちがいることに私たちも感銘を受けました。
映画『アニマル ぼくたちと動物のこと』(配給：ユナイテッドピープル）は、6月1日（土）シアター・イメージフォーラム他全国順次ロードショーとなります。地球に、動物に、人々に思いを寄せる方々へ希望をもたらす本作。わたしたち人間の役割のひとつとして、すべての人に見ていただきたい。
最後に、素晴らしい映画を作ってくださったシリル・ディオン監督に感謝申し上げます。そして、ユナイテッドピープルさん、人類の宝となる映画を日本で上映してくださり、私たちにもこのような機会をいただきましたことを改めてお礼申し上げます。
Are We Going Extinct? What the Film “Animal”
Cyril Dion’s latest film, “Animal” (distributed by United People), follows two young 16-year-old activists, Bella and Vipulan, as they travel the world in search of a way to stop the sixth mass extinction. The film carefully depicts the shifts in emotions, including anger, confusion, despair, and hope, of the younger generation, offering new insights as well as empathy. Over the course of an extraordinary journey, they come to realize just how deeply humans are tied to all other living species. And that by saving them… we’re also saving ourselves. As well as being aesthetic and moving, it is also an educational film and an opportunity to deepen our understanding of a wide range of issues, such as industrial animal agriculture and plastic waste, the coexistence of humans and animals, the realization of a de-growth society, and biodiversity. It also asks the question – what is our role as human beings in this time of climate crisis?
A special symposium was held on May 22, International Biodiversity Day, at the Hibiya Convention Hall. Youth were invited to the screening.
Dr. Jane Goodall on Screen
The film also features Dr. Jane Goodall. As soon as Cyril Dion told her about his film, Jane Goodall was delighted to be involved. For while the film high light the damage caused by human to the rest of the natural world, its message is one of finding solutions to the problems we have created. This is also the message of Dr. Jane and the Jane Goodall Institute──”We can change the world, we can, and we must act now”
Dr. Jane has been Bella’s role model since childhood. She speaks how much Dr. Jane has inspired her, but also can see the heartstrings in the scenes where the three interact with each other. Also, the audience were delighted to see Dr. Jane’s humor and charm. After watching the film, everyone had become Dr. Jane’s fans.
The pictured above are the members of the Jane Goodall Institute France and the film crew. Cyril says, “Jane’s genuine smile has the power to move people’s hearts. Just sitting next to her makes me feel as if I had meditated for three weeks on a mountain top,” he said during a recent visit to Japan.
On the International Biodiversity Day
After the screening, Mr. Yamagishi, Director of the Nature Conservation Office of WWF Japan, shared the current status of the global environment under the theme of biodiversity and spoke about the urgent need to realize “Nature Positive”.
Mina from Jane Goodall Institute Japan, also had an opportunity to introduced Dr. Jane’s story and Roots & Shoots, that is starting to spread in Japan. Rena from Yokohama International School, the leader of Roots & Shoots group, presented the action that started at her school. Fukitaro, who participates in our organization as an intern, also spoke about her past efforts of making all Kanagawa prefectural high school to use the renewable energy, and the importance of power shifting.
Other speakers included Katsuki Saito (NAMIMATI), Ichika Inaba (Biodiversity Wakamono Network, Mirei (founder and representative, Dream Builders), Hikari and Tecchan (Fridays For Future Yokohama). We were inspired in what each individuals were taking action to protect the global environment. We have a wonderful compassionate leaders in Japan which is our greatest hope.
The film “Animal” will be screen on June 1 (Sat) at Theatre Image Forum and other venues throughout Japan. This film brings hope to those who care about the earth, animals, and people. I hope that everyone will see this film as one of the roles of human beings.
