9月21日開催の「Peace Day 2024」にてブースを出展。平和への願いを込めて、鳩をつくろう September 21st is Peace Day. Lets Carry Our Hopes for Peace and Create a Peace Dove
ジェーン・グドール博士が国連平和大使である所以
「戦争のない日が1日でも実現できれば、2日、3日、1週間と伸ばしていけるはず──」
そんな願いを込めて奔走した俳優のジェレミー・ギリー氏によって、世界的な停戦と非暴力の日とする「国際平和デー」が2001年9月21日に国連総会決議にて制定されました。
そして2002年、ジェーン・グドール博士は「国連ピース・メッセンジャー」に任命されました。1977年に地域主導型の環境保全団体Jane Goodall Instituteを立ち上げ、野生動物や自然環境を守るためには、人命を救わなければならないと考えたジェーンはアフリカの人々の暮らしをよりよくし、地域の人々とともに自然環境を再生していくプログラムTacare（タカリ）を始めました。
同時に、若者主導のアクションプログラムRoots & Shoots（ルーツ&シューツ）は、「動物」「自然環境」「人間」にとって、よりよい世界を実現するための行動を起こす仲間を増やすことをミッションとしています。自然環境に関心を持つこと、異なる文化や民族、宗教、生活環境にいる世界中の人たちと互いに理解を深めること、そして、若い人たちの自信と希望を育むこと。こうしたことが、自分たちの身の回りにある課題を見つけるきっかけになり、そこから解決策を追求する情熱と、社会変化を起こす行動が生まれると確信しています。Roots & Shootsの輪は、世界65カ国以上で年間100万人に広がり、生きとし生けるものすべてへの尊敬と思いやり、そして平和を希求する心が育まれています。
平和を象徴するルーツ&シューツのストーリー

Roots & Shootsのエピソードで、こんな逸話があります。コンゴ共和国で8歳~12歳の子どもたち15人は、目の前に見えるはげ山に、木を植えて森を再生したいと立ち上がりました。しかしそこは鉱物資源が豊富な山であったため、いつも民兵がいました。そこで、子どもたちのメンターが大佐のところへ行って交渉し、兵隊をつけることを条件に山に入ることが許可されました。AK-47の自動小銃を担いだ屈強な兵士たちに囲まれ、15人の子どもたちは山に入ったものの、彼らが想像していたよりも目的地は遠く、やっとの思いで到着したその地の土壌は、植穴が作れないほどものすごく固かったのです。子どもたちは黙々と作業するものの、最年少の8歳の女の子は一向に穴が掘れないことや疲れから泣き出してしまいました。するとその10分後、ひとりの兵士が銃を木に立てかけ、彼女を手伝い始めました。そして15分もしないうちに、兵士たち全員が銃を置き、子どもたちと一緒になって木を植えていったのです。「まさに、平和を象徴する出来事で、私の心に深く刻まれています」とジェーンは振り返ります。

このように、国際平和デーはJane Goodall Instituteにとって非常に大きな意味を持ち、停戦と非暴力を願い世界各地でこの日をセレブレイトします。シーツや端材などを使ってPeace Doveを制作し、皆で空に飛ばすことなどが代表的な取り組みの一つとして定着しています。
日本では毎年NPO法人Peace Dayによって運営される大規模イベントが開催され、JGI Japanは9月21日は渋谷の代々木公園のイベント広場にて、ブース出展をします。ブースは屋外ステージ向かって左手の、売店や歩道橋の間あたりになります（お隣はピースボートさん）。
ブースでは、Roots & Shootsのみんなが作成したPeace Doveを飾ります！ また、ブースでは楽しいアートワークも。臨床美術士の𣕚木麻衣子さんの協力のもと、Peace Doveのメッセージカードを当日制作できる準備をしています。使わなくなった障子紙などを商店から提供いただき、そこにイラストレーターのRisa Kusumotoが描いた鳩を、𣕚木さんがお手製の消しゴムはんこにしていただき、和紙にスタンプ！ スポイトで好きに色付けなどを行い、真ん中にメッセージを書いたら完成です。一枚はブースに飾り、一枚は持ち帰って大切な人へ贈るポストカードに。

What is Peace Day & The Reason Why Dr. Jane Goodall Is a UN Messenger of Peace
“If we can achieve even one day without war, we should be able to extend it to two days, three days, and even a week.”
With this wish in mind, an actor Jeremy Gilley tirelessly worked towards establishing the International Day of Peace. On September 21, 2001, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously voted to designate the Day as a period of non-violence and cease-fire.
In 2002, Dr. Jane Goodall became a UN Messenger of Peace. She founded the Jane Goodall Institute, a community-centered conservation organization, in 1977. Jane believed that to protect wildlife and the natural environment, it was essential to save human lives as well. Thus, she started the Tacare program, aimed at improving the lives of people in Africa and regenerating the natural environment together with local communities.
At the same time, she launched the youth-led action program, Roots & Shoots, with a mission to inspire individuals to take actions that contribute to a better world for animals, the environment, and humans. The program emphasizes developing concern for the natural environment, fostering mutual understanding among people from different cultures, ethnicities, religions, and living conditions, and nurturing confidence and hope in young people. Jane believes that these factors help young people identify local issues, ignite their passion to pursue solutions, and drive social change.
Today, Roots & Shoots has expanded to over 65 countries, engaging one million people annually, fostering respect, compassion for all living beings, and the aspiration for world peace.
Roots & Shoots’ Story of Peace
One memorable episode from Roots & Shoots occurred in the Republic of Congo. Fifteen children, aged 8 to 12, decided to reforest a barren mountain they could see from their homes. However, the mountain was rich in mineral resources, so it was always occupied by militia. The children’s mentor negotiated with the militia commander, and the children were allowed to enter the mountain on the condition that they would be accompanied by soldiers to plant trees.
Surrounded by soldiers carrying AK-47 rifles, the 15 children made their way up the mountain. But it was much further than they had anticipated, and when they finally arrived, the soil was so hard that they couldn’t even dig holes to plant the trees. As the children worked so hard, an 8-year-old girl, the youngest of the group, started crying, overwhelmed by fatigue and the difficulty of digging. However, 10 minutes later, one of the soldiers set his gun down against a tree and began helping her. Within 15 minutes, all the soldiers had put their guns down and were planting trees alongside the children.
“It was truly a symbolic moment of peace, and it remains deeply in my heart,” Jane recalls.
International Day of Peace 2024 at Yoyogi Park
The International Day of Peace holds great significance for the Jane Goodall Institute, and the day is celebrated worldwide with a wish for ceasefire and non-violence. One of the most iconic activities is the creation of Peace Doves using sheets or scrap materials, which are then flown into the sky together.
This year, JGI Japan will participate in a large-scale event organized annually by the non-profit organization Peace Day. On September 21st, we will set up a booth at the event space in Yoyogi Park, Shibuya. Our booth will be on the left side of the outdoor stage, near the kiosks and pedestrian bridge (next to Peace Boat).
At the booth, we will display Peace Doves made by Roots & Shoots participants! There will also be fun art activities you can join. With the cooperation of art therapist Maiko Tamoki, visitors will have the opportunity to create message cards featuring Peace Doves. We have received donations of unused shoji paper from local stores, and Maiko will provide her handmade dove rubber stamps! The doves are illustrated by Risa Kusumoto. Visitors can color the cards using droppers and write a message in the center. One card will be displayed at the booth, and another can be taken home as a postcard to send to a loved one.
